Additional Information:
What's special about the Avana Pillow?
Our waking hours are spent upright with active muscle control, but we sleep recumbent with relaxed muscles. This means we need flexible support which adapts to the sleep surface. Years ago, people slept on wooden neck rests. Happily, these were abandoned for pillows. Now, NASA technology has given us the next level in comfort and support. The Avana(TM) Pillow is made of flowable visco-elastic memory foam morsels encased in smooth memory foam sheets. That means it is able to conform to the shape, pressure and temperature of the body, but spring back to its original shape when not in use. Essentially, it pushes back just enough to support the applied body weight and shape at every point to simulate a weightless feel, even as you shift position
Do we really need all 6-8 hours of sleep every night?
Just how much sleep you need varies with age, health and waking activity; adults typically function best with at least 6 hours per night. Getting less than that impairs productivity, motor control and concentration. It can make you depressed, it can aggravate the perception of pain, and it's linked to higher rates of heart disease, obesity, and depression. Everyone has a "sleep bank." Waking activities are like withdrawals; good sleep acts like a deposit. To be fully restorative physically and mentally, complete sleep cycles, including REM are best. Long term sleep deficits (withdrawals) may require compensatory "deposits," which take many nights to recover.
Every morning I get up with a stiff neck. Why does this happen and how can I fix it?
The neck is formed around seven mobile cervical vertebrae. While straight when seen from the front, viewed from the side, the cervical spine has a convex forward curve, referred to as lordosis. As we age, most of us experience a progressive loss of spinal flexibility, so better anatomic support is necessary during sleep. The Avana Pillow accomodates to your desired position. For those who choose added control when sleeping supine (face up), putting the smaller side of the Avana(TM) Contour Pillow under the hollow of the neck supports your cervical lordosis. If you sleep on your side, placing the larger portion of the Avana(TM) Contour Pillow under your neck will accommodate shoulder height to keep the neck straight (as seen from the side) and prevent that morning "crick."
When my neck hurts, the pain sometimes spreads to my shoulder and arm. Does this mean I have a slipped disc or a pinched nerve?
Not necessarily. Because of the sensitive nature of the spinal nerves and their proximity to discs and bones, even minor irritations may result in pain which radiates towards the arm. If the source of the irritation is removed this will likely resolve, even though it may take weeks or months. Numbness, tingling and weakness are warning signs that should be checked by a doctor.
Why is side sleeping so good for you?
Body support in the side position maintains ideal spinal alignment. The Avana(TM) Body Rest and Avana(TM) Side Sleeper cradle the ankles and knees to eliminate tossing and turning so your perfect sleep remains undisturbed. The Avana Pillow or Avana Contour Pillow complete the job by protecting the head and neck. Improved circulation and proper spinal alignment in the side position refresh the body while you sleep.
Why does my fiber filled pillow sometimes give me a headache?
It may be caused by over flexion of the neck. When you sleep on your back (supine), a pillow that is too firm will force you into a "chin-on-chest" position. This stretches muscles at the back of the neck causing irritation to the greater occipital nerve at the base of the skull. This can cause headaches that start at the neck of the head and radiate toward the forehead. Conversely, a pillow which is too soft can overextend the neck (head back position) leading to neck strain. The older you are, the more likely this is a problem. The Avana(TM) Pillow and Avana(TM) Contour Pillow are designed to simultaneously conform and support your neck so you get better sleep.
